Long Term Use of Heartburn Medications May Present Unacceptable Side Effects

Today more Americans are using heartburn remedies than ever before. In fact, according to industry reports, there were more than 110 million prescriptions for heartburn medications in 2009. Many patients find relief with these over-the-counter remedies for common and intermittent heartburn pain and discomfort.  Unfortunately, we are beginning to understand that these medications may also have some unacceptable side effect if used in the long term.

Medications for Heartburn

Antacids: tablets or liquids which neutralize the stomach acids which cause heartburn. (Tums, Alka-2, Maalox, Mylanta)  Potential side effects include diarrhea, constipation, kidney failure (long term use), and osteoporosis.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). medications that lower the production of acid in the stomach. (Prevacid, Nexium).  Potential long-term side effects include increased risk for bone fractures and bacterial infections.  In addition, some studies have suggested that the use of PPIs can reduce the effectiveness of anti-clotting medications, such as Plavix, used to prevent heart attacks and stroke.

H2 Blockers: Medications that block the production of stomach acid. (Zantac, Pepcid, and Tagamat).  Long-term side effects may include, liver problems, cardiac irregularitites, depression, agitation, hallucinations and confusion.

Because of the potential serious consequences from long-term use of many heartburn medications, the experts at the MetroSouth Heartburn Clinic have developed a program to offer additional options.  Lifestyle changes are part of all treatment plans.  Additionally, both traditional as well as incisionless surgery is available.  The experts at the Heartburn Clinic work with every patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that weighs the benefits and risks associated with all of the aforementioned treatment options.
