Men and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure plagues over one in three adults in the United States.  Men, under the age of 45, have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure than their female counterparts.  Other risk factors for developing high blood pressure include family history, African American decent, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, high salt intake, excess weight and drinking too much alcohol.  In addition, a new study, published in March 2010, suggests that foods high in added sugar may increase the risk of high blood pressure.   The American Heart Association also recommends limiting food and beverages with added sugars. In a statement last year, the association said an “emerging but inconclusive body of evidence” suggested “that increased intake of added sugars might raise blood pressure.”

Dr. Claudette Macklin, MetroSouth Medical Center Family Medicine Physician in Morgan Park, explains that frequently high blood pressure is referred to as a silent killer.  There are no outward signs of high blood pressure, but high blood pressure causes many potentially devastating complications including, weakness and scaring of the arteries, increased risk of blood clots, increased plaque build-up, increased workout of the circulatory system.  These conditions may result in heart attacks, strokes or damage to the organs and tissues of the body.

Because there are no red flags announcing high blood pressure, regular check-ups with a physician, which include monitoring of blood pressure, are critical to good cardiovascular health.  If high blood pressure is detected by a physician, steps to regulate blood pressure through diet and exercise or medications will be taken.  Having the support of a caring and knowledgeable internal medicine specialist, such as Dr. Macklin, helps patients adhere to the necessary lifestyle changes and compliance with medications.
