Gestational Diabetes – A Risk for Pregnant Women

Sue Bettenhausen, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Diabetes Educator at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, Illinois discusses the risk of developing gestational diabetes which is more prevalent in the Hispanic and African American population.  If detected, gestational diabetes can be managed effectively with diet and exercise during the remaining weeks of the pregnancy.  Ms. Bettenhausen discusses the tests used to detect gestational diabetes as well as specific changes in diet which can help keep blood sugar levels within normal limits.
