For many reasons, including financial security, today’s women are working longer, getting married later and carefully preparing for pregnancy and childbirth. When it comes to childbirth, planning is paying off. A recent study in The Lancet medical journal shows that maternal deaths have declined sharply because women have more access to health care and are taking better care of themselves and watching what they eat.
“It is so important for women to quit smoking, eat right and be at an optimal weight and in good health before becoming pregnant, says Dr. Arlette Brown, a board certified obstetrician at MetroSouth Medical Center. “Equally as important is the need to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, because if any of those levels are off, it can be dangerous to the health of the mom and her baby. Preparation is the key to a successful pregnancy, delivery and to the baby’s life.”
