Dr. Enrique Beckmann, CEO of Metrosouth Medical Center, recently presented a $20,000 check to Dr. Yves-Mario Piverger for his Haitian Health Project. The check presentation took place during an event honoring the Haitian family doctor, who recently returned from a medical mission trip caring for earthquake victims in his homeland. The donation was from medical staff, volunteers, and employees of the hospital. The Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine also contributed a large amount to the cause.
Dr. Piverger lived in Port-au-Prince for eight years of his childhood. Because of his ability to speak French, Creole and Spanish, he was recruited to help in Haiti. Over the course of his mission trip, he brought seven babies into the world. He also distributed over 400 pounds of medical supplies to patients. He traveled from house to house, treating wounds and distributing antibiotic ointment, which is impossible to find in Haiti.
The money that was raised will help him with his goal of building additional health clinics and providing mobile treatment centers for the people who live in and around Port-au-Prince. In addition, the hospital has a storage room full of equipment and medical supplies that employees are collecting for Dr. Piverger’s mission. Employees are also coordinating a shoe collection in collaboration with the Blue Island Kiwanis Club.
Dr. Piverger is a family physician who practices out of MetroSouth’s South Holland Health Center.
