Tips for Managing Diabetes from MetroSouth Medical Center

Do you think you have diabetes or pre-diabetes? Take this quick quiz.

According to a recently released study, the number of U.S. residents with diabetes is expected to double over the next 25 years. That would bring the total number to 44.1 million people in 2034, up from 23.7 million today. Contributors to diabetes include a lack of exercise, over-eating and drinking alcohol — exactly what many Chicago area residents will be doing during this holiday season.

MetroSouth Medical Center is helping diabetics, and those at risk for diabetes, with some tips and tools for preventing diabetes complications or a diabetes diagnosis.

“Managing blood sugar is a big concern for diabetes patients. Binging on all of the rich food and sugar that we are tempted with every day can cause some serious health issues,” explains Dr. Miranda Huffman, a MetroSouth family physician. “Sometimes we all need a reminder to keep our health in mind.”

It is estimated that more than 30% of the 60 million diabetics and pre-diabetics in the U.S. are undiagnosed. For anyone who is concerned that they may be at risk for diabetes, a self-assessment tool is now available on the MetroSouth Medical Center website to assist in determining risk factors. Dr. Huffman and her colleagues encourage anyone that is interested to take the quick self assessment, and especially those with high blood pressure, a family history of diabetes, who are overweight and over the age of 40.
